FLATLAND SUMMER [2023]
THE COUNCIL OF CORNERS[2023]
The first chapter of DEVOID took place in Flatland, with an aesthetic influenced by abstract minimalism and Atari 2600 games. More Adventures in Flatland takes these pixel abstracts to another level, imbuing them with a computational rhythm that ensures no pieces will look the same twice.
SURFACE TENSION [2023]
The titles of MAIF pieces also contribute to the wider ‘DEVOID’ narrative, with the collective of titles spinning a tale of unrest in Flatland, as rumours of REX’s transcendence to a ‘third dimension’ take hold, leading to riots among the citizens of Flatland.
MAIF pieces are typical of my work - bold, colourful abstracts focused on shape and form that are designed to be framed and live as artworks in motion. When producing them, I looked to influences as broad and basic as 8-bit video games, VHS tracking, Dial-up Internet, and many of the artists I love, from Rothko to Riley, Albers and Molnar.
AN UNFORTUNATE LACK OF DEPTH [2023]
Most of my visual work is intended to act as an extension of the central story of 'DEVOID’ and my upcoming novel, PERIVALE. For me, art can be lore - and vice versa. There’s something very exciting to me about tracing the steps back through the story universe I’ve been building and having the joy of being able to leap from novel, to film, to poetry collection and fine art.

‘More Adventures in Flatland’ [2023] is a series of ‘living’ abstracts (perpetually in motion) that depict the location known as ‘Flatland’ in other narrative works by Justin Tagg (DEVOID).
This collection is a ‘side quest’ from the main ‘DEVOID’ (2021) collection, a 4-chapter story charting the journey of REX, a square that vows to free itself from it’s 2D canvas after an unexpected union with a higher-dimensional being, named ‘1’.
